The Archaeological Survey of India or ASI body has also put a sign outside the Bhangarh Fort to warn tourists and locals not to enter its premises after sunset and before sunrise.

Even if the government does not openly acknowledge the presence of any supernatural power here, the board says all this and there is ample evidence that there is something that should not be played with.

Bhangarh Fort was one of the architectural wonders of the country in its heyday. It was built in 1573 by Man Singh I for his grandson Madho Singh I. But it was named after his grandfather Bhan Singh, hence the name Bhangarh.

Bhangarh was a prosperous state with temples, havelis and palaces. But it soon saw its downfall and since then it is lying in ruins, leaving nothing but wandering souls in the fort.

Tourists who come here cannot help but admire the architecture of what is left and imagine what it must have been like in earlier days. However, it is the sinister sign that attracts their attention and forces them to return before it gets dark. Why is there a symbol here and why is that place left? There are two stories surrounding this legend.

According to the first story, the reason for the destruction and desolation of the fort of Bhangarh is the curse of an ascetic.

It is believed that there used to be a Baba Balnath near the fort and he had a condition that no building should be higher than his house and cast a shadow over it. If that happens, they declared, destruction will occur. The local king ignored the ascetic’s rent and of course, the curse came true and led to the current state of the Bhangarh Fort.

Another legend about a magician living in Bhangarh is that he was fascinated by the princess and wanted to find her. He was adept at magic and created a potion that would perform magic and attract him. One day he swapped his perfume for this medicine. But before she falls in love with him, he learns of her evil plans.

So he plotted another plot to kill her. When he saw the magician, he put a potion on a stone and because of the spell on it, he swung and crushed it. But with his dying breath, the magician cursed Bhangarh and said that it would be destroyed. Soon, the Mughals invaded the kingdom and destroyed the city.

They may have died, but the spirits of these people, including wizards and princesses, roam the interiors of the fort. Do not let anyone go in and if someone goes inside, it does not come back alive. The spirits are so strong that there is a signboard that warns people not to go inside after dark.
