Downey’s began acting as a young child. His mother, Elsie, was an actress who instilled in her son a love of acting.
Growing up with his older sister Alison in Greenwich Village, Robert Downey Jr. made his film debut playing a puppy in his father’s film Pound (1970), in which the actors played dogs. He did small parts in many of his father’s other films.
Downey’s parents divorced at the age of 13, and the young actor moved to Los Angeles with his father.

In June 1996, the actor was stopped by police after driving naked in a Porsche on Sunset Boulevard, and found not only without clothing, but in possession of cocaine, heroin, and a .357 Magnum. Less than a month later, and hours before the charges were leveled, Downey was again violating the law after being found insane at a neighbor’s house.
For the next several years, Downey’s life was a haze of headline-producing, dependency-inducing mistakes and their consequences. There was a 12-month stay in prison, and another visit to drug rehab.
In November 2000, Robert Downey Jr. was arrested again, this time in a Palm Springs hotel room, where he was discovered with cocaine and a Wonder Woman outfit. He was charged with possession of narcotics.
Downey’s trial, originally set for late January, was delayed by several months while his lawyers held talks with prosecutors.
In March 2001, the two parties failed to reach a plea agreement, and the matter was set for a preliminary hearing in late April.
